Care For The Terminal Cancer Patient

The trauma that cancer patients experience after a positive diagnosis, simply put, is overtly agonizing. If the cancer type is malignant tumors, the pain is even more serious and really traumatizing because there is a realization that life is suddenly coming to a premature end. Cancer management requires repetitive chemotherapy sessions which are painful and dehumanizing. When a person finds himself or herself there, they always ask themselves ‘why me'sought of questions, over and over again, until it leads to mental destitution and confusion, most times marked by a radical change in the behavior pattern, which is always towards the adverse side. This people need care and patient attention.

Caring for cancer patients requires you to be aware of specific things and areas of interest which must be approached with ultmost caution. A cancer patient finds it hard and even impossible to retain attention necessary for the normal mental and innate cognitive processes. At most times the patient appears very reserved, disinterested and withdrawn.

The caretaker must avoid further victimizing and isolating the patient. The fact is, strands of discordant thoughts interfere with the patient conscious mind to the extent that he or she might not answer the questions directed at him or her at all. The faint-hearted and impatient caretaker will further isolate a patient, though unconsciously. The patient at that time feels that most people don't understand him or her any longer.

The caretaker must be aware of events in the patient's life that cause psychological instability such as numerous medical appointments. At this point, most medical appointments seem not to bring any tangible results whatsoever. To compound this, memory loss plagues the patient and he or she has to be reminded of even personal issues.

It is mostly difficult to truly know how a patient feels, what he or she likes or prefers, due to frequent mood changes. The ultimate of cancer makes a patient experience long spells of mental confusion and loss of memory, followed by the lack of muscular control and sleeping disorders.

Don't abandon the patient's needs even if his or her condition deteriorates. Now they need you more than ever before. At later stages of cancer, be ready for delirium, an ultimate condition of cancer patients, although the actual symptoms of cancer may appear and vanish in a whim.

Remember that even when cancer grows from bad to worse, a temporary cure is always available, which helps relieve pain and adversity of suffering. The very last day of life in a cancer patient comes when there is permanent failure in the functionality of the affected organ. Until then he or she needs love, care, patience and encouragement.

Caretakers need to understand cancer's wrought cognitive disorders because growing tumors always exert changes in psychological state of the patient. Indeed, cancer patient are susceptible to various new infections due to weakened immunity. Hygienic care, support and continuous therapy prevents new infections which may increase a patient's suffering. Additionally, it is prudent to seek an expert who can administer painkillers to relieve pain alongside the core medication.

Should doctors be allowed to cancel appointments with cancer patients?

I've heard of doctors having to cancel appointments with cancer patients and then the patients missing crucial time checkups? Shouldn't these patients be referred to another Dr if that one's not available?

when time is crucial to treatments and cancer patients are very weak (it's a struggle to get ready for an appointment) i think it is important to have a dr. that has enough compassion to be there at all times ON TIME for their patients. Dr's r humans and we all know things happen, but this is not a dentist appointment or an appointment for an ingrown toenail, this is LIFE, so the least the dr could do is make sure a backup dr is in place!!!!
