Now if that smoker continues to smoke that risk of getting lung cancer continues to rise and the risk of contacting other problems like emphysema become greater.

When somebody quits smoking they are giving their body a chance of living longer and reduce the risk of getting smoking related diseases. It is not however a case of quit today better tomorrow. If the smoker has been smoking for 10 years it will take 15 years for them to reduce their risks down to that of a non smoker. So if a person started smoking at 20, quit at 30, they would be 45 before they were at the same risk as other 45 year olds.

Why doesnt people believe that a mental illness or condition is a real medical probllem?

It seems that unless people can see a "broken arm", a "bleeding wound", a "cancer diagnosis", "asthma" , "arthiritis" (and many more lables out there) a mental condition is less inmportant as the above. There are so many people that do not understand that it is real...it is a struggle everyday to just get to the end of the day. You are ridiculed for you behavior as irresponsible or inconsiderate. You get the picture. IT IS AS REAL AS CANCER OR AIDS OR ANY OTHER UNCUREABLE ILLNESS!!

e yea & if you act normal or happy ,you`re a con-they can`t understand it`s an act,& you`ll pay mentally later. also they have no idea of how much medicine you have to take to act normal.noone in my family,friends( my husband does) believe i`m mentall ill,because i worked for27 yrs, then had anervous breakdown,maybe because i wasn`t hospitized-lots of out-patient
