prostate cancer is younger men?
Is it more widespread than first thought? Since my dad's got prostate cancer, I've been reading everything I can about it. Whilst my dad was in his mid-sixties when he first got it, I've seen an increasing amount of posts on forums and on here about men having it in their 40s, their early 40s infact. Does anyone know any statistics for how many men this age get it? Is it more common than first thought perhaps? Do men need to be tested earlier for it do you think?
I know it is mostly thought of as an "old mans disease" with most men getting it in their 60s and 70s, but like I say I have read instances of young men getting it that has made me think that maybe this is more common than first thought.
EDIT-I meant to write "in" younger men, if you didn't get that! Damn, I thought I read the question before I posted it aswell!
I guess you're right Denise-since the PSa test is very inaccurate anyway, earlier testing probably wouldn't help.
Men’s lifetime risk for prostate cancer is 1 in 6 and his risk from dying from it is 1 in 34. Of all prostate cancers 8.7% occur under 55 and 0.3% occur under 45 years old. This is based on all prostate cancers in the US from 2002 – 2006. Our recommendations do not need to be changed. Our incidence rate increase after we started using the PSA as part of our screening and our death rate peaked in 1991 with 27 deaths in every 100,000 accordingly. However, since that time is has slowly declined.
