Symptoms of Bladder Cancer

Bladder cancer is the result of cell changes in the mucous (inside) wall of the bladder. It is caused by changes in the cells' chromosomes or DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid).This form of cancer develops most often in people between the ages of 60 and 79, with the average age being 67. The disease is three times more common in men than in women. It is one of the most common forms of cancer to strike men.

Blood in the urine

The most common symptom of bladder cancer is blood in the urine.  4 out of 5 people with bladder cancer have some blood in their urine.  You may actually see the blood or it might be there in such small amounts that you cannot see it.  Even if it can't be seen, blood can be picked up in a urine test.

The blood does not have to be there all the time.  It can come and go.  So if you ever see blood in your urine, you should go to your doctor.

Blood or blood clots in the urine (hematuria). Hematuria occurs in 80% to 90% of people who have bladder cancer and is the most common symptom. Usually it is not painful.2

Pain during urination (dysuria).

Urinating small amounts frequently.

If bladder cancer is advanced in nature, many different bladder cancer symptoms can occur, depending on the location involved with tumor. Other bladder cancer symptoms include abdominal pain, flank pain, kidney failure, weight loss, fever, and bone pain.

Blood in urine (hematuria) — blood may appear cola colored or bright red in your urine, or may appear in a microscopic examination of your urine

The most common symptom is blood in the urine, although there are many other conditions (such as bladder infections) which can cause this.  The other less common symptoms (frequency of urination  and pain when urinating) can also have other causes.

Blood in urine (hematuria). This is the most common symptom. Approximately, 4 in 5 patients with bladder cancer have blood in their urine. The blood can be noticeable by the naked eye, a condition known as gross hematuria, or only during a laboratory analysis, condition called microscopic hematuria. When the hematuria is noticeable without a microscopic examination, the urine may appear reddish or darker than normal, or the blood is present as blood clots. The amount of blood in the urine is not related to the cancer extant. This symptom can be inconsistent, can appear one day and disappears the next day.

Because tumors are made of our own body cells and not from foreign substances, they are not rejected by our immune system or inflammation. It is only when the tumor grows large enough to create a sign or symptom, that it will present itself either to an examining physician or to the individual him/herself. It is the nature of the organ with respect to its function and its anatomy that will aid in the detection of a tumor that might reside within it.

My father is 76 years old. He is diagnosed as having muscle invasive bladder cancer?

We have not given any treatment so far. His symptoms include blood passing through urine, pain on left side due to swollen kidney, urge for frequent urination and general weakness. Any surgical procedure is risky for his age at the moment. What are options are available to improve his condition and extend his survival to the maximum extent possible?

any cancer treatment is very hard on the body and at 76 it may be fatal.
the big three are surgery , radiation and chemotherapy. depending on the cancer the outcome maybe terminal anyway, in which case the consideration is , is it worth the pain and suffering caused by the treatments when your buying only a limited time. Radiation burns and is painful for months afterward, while most forms of chemotherapy will make the patient very very ill, the side effects are often very very nasty. While its a bitter concept to accept , it is sometimes not the humane to extend his life if it means a remaining life of pain.
Obviously someone on the Internet cant diagnose your grandfather, however if cancer spreads outside the original site then the cancer has a far greater chance of not being able to be brought under control.

At 76 the options available will be extremely limited, it may be time to talk to your medical advisers about the advisability of any treatment and just keep him comfortable until nature takes its course
