Do I need to get checked for MRSA?

My dad recently went thru a recurrence of colon cancer and was discharged on 6/1 with an infected incision site from surgery. Two weeks later he became extremely sick (pneumonia & pleurisy) and was admitted to another hospital on 6/15. He had his sputum cultured and we found out today he has MRSA in his lungs. He's been coughing continually for the last three weeks. My mom and I have been there every day with him for hours at a time while he's been coughing. Are we at risk for MRSA? Should we be checked out or what should we watch for?

MRSA is spread by contact. So you could get MRSA by touching another person who has it on the skin. Or you could get it by touching objects that have the bacteria on them. MRSA is carried, or "colonized," by about 1% of the population, although most of them aren't infected.

MRSA infections are most common among people who have weak immune systems and are living in hospitals, nursing homes, and other heath care centers. Infections can appear around surgical wounds or invasive devices, like catheters or implanted feeding tubes.

The key is to maintain good hand hygiene. Wash your hands frequently after touching anything in the room.
