Mom had days to live after being told she had Pancreatic Cancer?
my beloved mother died on may 23 of this year. she went in for a test on her colon monday. her oxygen levels were low so they advised me to take her to the E.R. On Wed, the doctor from the hospital called and said she had end stage pancreatic cancer and only days to live. 4 days later she died. No one knew a thing. she was a type 1 diabetic taking insulin 2x a day. her blood was so wacked out !! everyday, soaring to almost 400, and then dropping down to 150. shouldnt her primary doctor have noticed she was sick? he had started her on the insulin in March of 2010, because the pills werent working. shouldnt that have been a clue to look for cancer in her pancreas? or at least have some kind of test?
Her doctor had no reason to suspect pancreatic cancer and even if he did it and it was found earlier it would not have changed anything. By the time a patient has symptoms it is already too late. Less than 20% of pancreatic cancer patients survive the first year and less than 3% survive 5 years. The only chance at surviving at the longer end of the scale is surgery, but less than 20% have resectable disease and it is a high risk major surgery. I’m sorry.
